First Social Housing Sod Cutting for Minister Attwood (10th June, 2010)

Social Development Minister Alex Attwood officially started the building work of a £6.4million Oaklee housing scheme for active older people in Bangor.

The development of 47 two bedroom apartments at Central Avenue is funded by the Department for Social Development and Oaklee Homes Group. The accommodation has been designed to incorporate the recommendations of the Crime Design Advisor from the PSNI, ensuring that residents feel safe and secure. In addition, they are also being built to high energy efficiency specifications.
Minister Attwood said: "North Down has many advantages but it also is an area of high housing need. I welcome this new housing scheme which when complete, will provide 47 modern, energy efficient apartments for our more mature citizens.

"The delivery of sustainable housing is a key priority for my Department. I know those who come to live here will appreciate the efforts that have been made to create this new accommodation right in the heart of the community, close to all local amenities and public transport links.
"Oaklee Homes Group, working alongside the Department for Social Development and the Housing Executive, is to be congratulated for bringing this scheme to fruition."

Construction by TA Kernoghan Holdings has just commenced, with completion planned for February 2012.
